Why GBSI, Why Now?

GBSI was launched in 2013, with the mission to promote the use of best practices and standards to improve the quality of life science research. GBSI was envisioned by ATCC CEO Dr. Ray Cypess who championed the idea that the biomedical community needed a thought leader dedicated to advancing best practices and standards. With his leadership, ATCC’s foundation BioNexus agreed to fund GBSI’s core activities for its first five years. GBSI became operational in February 2013.

GBSI was initially funded by a generous grant from the BioNexus Foundation, established by ATCC. The BioNexus Foundation recognized the importance an organization like GBSI to improve the quality and reproducibility of biomedical research through standards and best practices.  Bionexus continues to fund GBSI’s core activities. Today, GBSI also receives support to advance its mission from our Leadership Circle members and special grants from National Institutes of Health, Susan G. Komen, and several corporate sponsors.  We thank these funders for their generous commitment. If you would like to support the work of GBSI, please contact Michael Byrne at mbyrne@gbsi.org
